THIS WAS LAST UPDATED ON 1OCT2017

We play pick-up street hockey every Sunday morning at Corporal Burns Park, located at the corner of Flagg St and Memorial Drive in Cambridge. The park has an outdoor public street hockey rink.

This is a free informal pick-up game, open to the public. We play at the recreational level, and have players of all skill levels. No experience necessary.

There are no set teams. Each week we divide the people who show up into two teams. We play from 9:30am until about noon, but people come and go as suits them. If you show up and we're already playing, put your stick at the end of one of the queues on either side of the gate. The stick closest to the gate is the next person to go in when someone comes off.

An invite goes out every Tuesday, and a reminder is sent on Friday. Game on or off calls are sent out on Saturday morning based on the weather forecast and the number of yes RSVPs. Less than 10 yes RSVPs is considered not enough to play. If more than 18 people sign up to play a particular week and you're only looking to play for an hour or so, then please consider coming around 10:45am.

We play 4 on 4, in sneakers, using a ball. There's free on-street parking for all, even non-residents, on Sundays. Please bring a stick, your own water, and an extra neon/yellow shirt for teams. There is a water fountain that Cambridge turns on in the summer.

We play through the winter, as snow and ice permit. On weeks where there is a lot of snow on the ground, invites and game on/off calls may not be sent, as the rink will be unplayable.

Any member is welcome to step up and help out with things, such as sending the weekly invites and game on/off calls, organizing fund collections for team equipment such as balls or goalie gear, carrying and laundering team equipment such as penny jerseys or balls or goalie gear, checking the rink during the week for snow and ice conditions, organizing the weekly goalie roster, organizing social events, making and balancing teams each Sunday, calling out high sticks during games, etc. Please see any of the co-captains if you have any questions or would like to help with any of these things. The cocaptains are Tom W, Donny N, Mark S, Scott F, and Sean G.

We have held Winter Classic and Summer Classic events in the past. These events have included skills competitions, round-robin tournaments, team pictures, team shirts, and food.

Team Rules
1. SAFETY FIRST. Keep the blade of your stick at or below your waist at all times. Please be conscious that if you are tall, carrying the stick at your hip could put the tip of your blade near another player's face. Be careful with keeping your stick down on the wind up and follow through on slap shots, and consider others' safety when taking slap shots. If you think a play might be a bit aggressive, please don't do it. No hacking, elbowing, checking, or playing too rough.
2. BE RESPECTFUL. We're all here to have fun. It's fine to be competitive, but it's never ok to be mean to people. We're all on the same team. Be nice to each other.
